NATRONA COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY PLATFORM
(In alphabetical order)
CHILDREN’S ISSUES
The moral high ground of the party’s platform should be how it serves its children.
CIVIL RIGHTS
We recognize the Constitution’s Bill of Rights as the bedrock of both individual liberties and national strength. We assert that all people should be secure in their persons, homes, schools, work places and communities and free from government intrusion into their privacy, abuse of power, or discriminatory treatment.
CONSERVATION, ENVIRONMENT, WILDLIFE, AND PUBLIC LANDS
We support development of a sustainable Wyoming environment. Good environmental stewardship and conservation are core Wyoming values. We acknowledge the impact of climate change.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
We support the diversification of the state’s economy. We encourage comprehensive accounting of expenditures and results of the state’s economic development efforts.
EDUCATION
We support the Wyoming State Constitution’s provision for a complete and uniform system of public instruction all of Wyoming’s children. We support quality, preschool educaton. We support the needs of or university and community colleges to provide the technical and professional needs of the people of Wyoming.
FEDERAL DOMESTIC POLICY
(See Resolutions Section)
FEDERAL FOREIGN POLICY
We reject global imperialism in American foreign policy based upon economic dominance, unilateralism, and a pre-emptive strike doctrine.
CULTURE AND FINE ARTS
We support:
● strong public patronage for the fine arts on both the professional and amateur level and for people of all ages, because the expression of the self and of the individual point of view involved in the fine arts is intrinsically valuable; and
● the development of auditory and visual literacy as requisite for full participation in our present society and of increasing importance as complexity continues to increase in the future.
HEALTHCARE
People expect Wyoming Government to lead the way in system-wide health care reform.
All Wyoming people deserve affordable, quality, and comprehensive medical and mental health care.
IMMIGRATION
We need comprehensive, effective and compassionate reform of our current immigration policies. honoring the rule of law.
We strongly oppose the adoption of local or state statutes that deprive immigrants of the common benefits of all residents.
INTEGRITY IN GOVERNMENT
(See also Integrity in Government Resolution)
Ours should be one of uncompromising dedication to the rule of law, applied impartially and consistently.
We support:
● the passage and strict enforcement of laws regulating ethics and conflicts of interest as they pertain to all state and local government officials; and,
● public financing for federal, state and legislative political campaigns.
We support the complete elimination of discrimination against any identifiable group in elections,.
We oppose:
● all voting methods that do not provide a “paper trail” for each ballot cast;
● the disenfranchisement of qualified voters through intimidation, misinformation and development of obstacles to the free exercise of the right to vote, including voter ID laws that have a disproportionate negative impact on minorities; and,
● attempts to gerrymander election districts as an attack on democracy.
JUDICIARY AND PENAL SYSTEM
We honor and treasure that the United States and Wyoming Constitutions create and recognize an independent judiciary as the third branch of government.
We support a judiciary and penal system that is fair, just and accessible to all, with particular concern for the unique needs of juveniles.
We support the restoration of “absolute liability” to the worker’s compensation statute.
LABOR
Support for Wyoming workers is the cornerstone of the Wyoming Democratic Party. The party will never retreat from the fight for the rights, dignity, health and safety that all workers deserve. The Party also recognizes the value and importance of public employees at all levels to our economic and social well being. We acknowledge that good government depends on good government employees and that the maintenance of good government services requires competitive pay.
As Democrats we are committed to the principles of industrial democracy and free collective bargaining. We recognize that any gain for the workers is a gain for the dignity of all people. We strongly believe the concept of majority rule - the foundation of our government and political system - should be applied to the workplace and the workers and employers should be free from unnecessary government interference with the right to create contractual relationships.
We, therefore, support the right to bargain collectively in the private and public sectors as well as the repeal of W.S. 27-7-108 through 27-7-115, which interferes with employee-employer right to bargain effectively and is erroneously referred to as a “right-to-work” law. We support efforts to educate the citizens and lawmakers of Wyoming as to the factual meaning of this destructive law, and more so support the implementation of “fair share” labor standards.
We oppose the use of tipping exemptions and the discriminatory minimum wage currently paid to tipped employees.
We deplore the indifference of the state government to the gender wage gap in Wyoming. The wage gap between women and men in Wyoming needs to be eliminated in this “Equality State.”
TAXES
We support establishing a 1% severance tax to provide a State Trust Fund to guarantee state health insurance, medical and dental liability funding pools, to train medical personnel, establish health clinic access in Wyoming communities and build infrastructure, including highways and schools.
We propose increasing taxes on both tobacco and alcohol sales to go toward the providing of a state health care system..
We propose eliminating sales tax on utilities.
