WHY RUN FOR PUBLIC OFFICE?
Dear Citizen,
Maybe someone's asked you; maybe you've come up with the idea on your own, but if you're even considering being a candidate for political office, it's for sure someone's asked you, "Why run?"
Let's just acknowledge that there are plenty of almost-good-enough reasons not to run for office. I can tell you from personal experience that they are vastly outweighed by the many good reasons to ... uh ... just do it.
Right off the top of my head:
• You can't win if you don't play! Someone's going to win that election and it might as well be you.
• You FINALLY get to have your say. Everyone wants to talk to candidates: news media, special interest groups, voters, other candidates. The bully pulpit is yours, if you're running. Otherwise, you're just complaining — not that that isn't valuable. Somehow.
• We're going to need to do some serious talking about the future of our homeplace, from the city level on up to the planet. Running for office makes you eligible to participate more powerfully in the discussions that will create the public framework for the future circumstances of yourself and your family than any other activity.
• You would not believe how many fun and interesting people you're going to meet that you might not otherwise encounter. There are party stalwarts, officeholders, voters, campaign workers, media figures, other candidates — all sorts of people with their own viewpoints and principles. This adds richness to your life, even makes you more entertaining at socials and barn dances.
• Lots of the people you meet will be like-minded others, and you will benefit from the affirmation and confidence spending time with them gives you. Turns out you are not alone.
• You get to see how the whole process works from the inside, and find the spots where it's most effective to poke the bear.
• It takes at least two sides to have a conversation. Without the whetstone, even the keenest axe eventually becomes a dull club.
• Running — having stuck your neck out and stood up for your values in the most public of ways — is something you can be very proud of. Pretty much what we do for ourselves dies with us, but what we do for others lives on after us.
• And here's the weirdest thing: it is possible to conduct a minimalist campaign with a lot of these features and do it on zero dollars. That's right, $0. Tell The Natrona County Democratic Party you are running, fill out a minimal form and the Party will cover your filing fee for races within Natrona County. Your name will appear on the ballot!
That's what's in it for you, personally, dear Citizen. Here's what's in it for good ol' American Democracy:
• Your name will appear on the ballot! I know I said that above. The fact is that your participation is good for both you and American Democracy!
• Citizens who run create the opportunity for citizens who are not running to say, emphatically, "This is not what I want, even if that's what everyone else on my block wants." A minority party vote is a clear rejection of the majority party's stance, more insistent than a write-in or an undervote. For this opportunity to exist, American Democracy must have candidates.
• Forward social movement stalls without competing ideas. Office seekers of minority parties (that could be you) must provide them, because the tendency of officeholders is to hang on to those offices by clinging to whatever got them there. Repeatedly exposing new or alternative ideas to the electorate often eventually normalizes them.
• You are needed. Choices at the ballot box are the very foundation of government of, by, and for the people. Dear Citizen, you and all the other lovers and critics of American Democracy must step up, step up and take your rightful, necessary place.
